2nd Hadith of Imam Nawawi's Forty Hadith (Part 1)
Saturday, April 29, 2006
Assalamu'alaikum and hello to all readers,

Today I would like to write about the above topic which was discussed in my usrah group yesterday. Well, I think all of my readers are malaysians, so, I think it's ok to write in Malay. But if there's a request to write in English, then, I will do so for my next entries... :D (I will translate this article if anyone wants me too)

Start here:

Sekiranya kita renung balik kehidupan seharian kita, berapa bnyk kali kita laser2 org, mungkin org tuh sakit hati tanpa disedari. Berapa banyak kali kita mengumpat org? berapa banyak kali kita menyakitkan hati org? Berapa banyak kali kita berzikir?

Amiin..

Oh, teringat saya kisah Saidina Umar yg memasuki Islam. Lalu, pergilah ia menjumpai Rasulullah and utk meringkaskan cerita, dia pun memeluk agama Islam. Takbir! Allahuakbar!

Jadi, boleh lah kita ambil iktibar di sini bahawa kalau kita nak menarik org kafir memasuki Islam, berilah Al-Quran kepada mereka. Berapa banyak sudah kisah bagaimana orang kafir memasuki Islam hanya dengan membaca Al-Quran (translation) sahaja. SubhanALLAH. Maha Suci Allah.

Maaf sebab dah berceloteh panjang sangat.

Salam,
toriq

What have I been doing lately?
Wednesday, April 26, 2006
Assalamu'alaikum and hello to all,

You might have been wondering where was I for the past week, did you? You may not, but I know some of you are! Wekkk (imitating puteri nad)

Anyway, I just want to let you know that I was very busy lately (and still am busy!) trying to catch up with my study. Final exams are just a month away and i have to cover all the things I have learnt in Year 3. There will be 3 big exams starting at the end of May which I'm always shivering whenever I thought about it. And to tell you the truth, I haven't revised the past modules yet as currently I'm reading about cardiology, my current module! Please do pray for my success! *wink wink. :D

Speaking about cardiology, this morning I'm going to have a bed-side teaching with my consultant's registrar. I havent been taught by him before so hopefully he is ok. But, it's a different issue with my consultant. He is quite scary! (at least I'm scared of him!). Last time, during the first week of the rotation, we had 2 sessions with him, and guess what, we couldnt answer lots of his questions! (oh come on! we were in our first week of rotation!). He was really dissapointed with us and at the end he scolded us! Waaaa.. I'm scared of him and moreover, I'm going to have another bed-side teaching with him on Friday this week! Waaa... Better be ready this time! *woot woot!

Enough for now. Below are my pics today. Hehe

PROPHET MUHAMMAD, No. 1
The 100, a Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History by Michael H. Hart

My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular levels. Of humble origins, Muhammad founded and promulgated one of the world's great religions, and became an immensely effective political leader. Today, thirteen centuries after his death, his influence is still powerful and pervasive. The majority of the persons in this book had the advantage of being born and raised in centers of civilization, highly cultured or politically pivotal nations. Muhammad, however, was born in the year 570, in the city of Mecca, in southern Arabia, at that time a backward area of the world, far from the centers of trade, art, and learning. Orphaned at age six, he was reared in modest surroundings.

Islamic tradition tells us that he was illiterate. His economic position improved when, at age twenty-five, he married a wealthy widow. Nevertheless, as he approached forty, there was little outward indication that he was a remarkable person. Most Arabs at that time were pagans, who believed in many gods. There were, however, in Mecca, a small number of Jews and Christians; it was from them no doubt that Muhammad first learned of a single, omnipotent God who ruled the entire universe.

When he was forty years old, Muhammad became convinced that this one true God (Allah) was speaking to him, and had chosen him to spread the true faith. For three years, Muhammad preached only to close friends and associates. Then, about 613, he began preaching in public. As he slowly gained converts, the Meccan authorities came to consider him a dangerous nuisance. In 622, fearing for his safety, Muhammad fled to Medina (a city some 200 miles north of Mecca), where he had been offered a position of considerable political power. This flight, called the Hegira, was the turning point of the Prophet's life. In Mecca, he had had few followers. In Medina, he had many more, and he soon acquired an influence that made him a virtual dictator. During the next few years, while Muhammad's following grew rapidly, a series of battles were fought between Medina and Mecca. This was ended in 630 with Muhammad's triumphant return to Mecca as conqueror. The remaining two and one-half years of his life witnessed the rapid conversion of the Arab tribes to the new religion.

When Muhammad died, in 632, he was the effective ruler of all of southern Arabia. The Bedouin tribesmen (badwi kot?) of Arabia had a reputation as fierce warriors. But their number was small; and plagued by disunity and internecine warfare, they had been no match for the larger armies of the kingdoms in the settled agricultural areas to the north. However, unified by Muhammad for the first time in history, and inspired by their fervent belief in the one true God, these small Arab armies now embarked upon one of the most astonishing series of conquests in human history. To the northeast of Arabia lay the large Neo-Persian Empire of the Sassanids; to the northwest lay the Byzantine, or Eastern Roman Empire, centered in Constantinople. Numerically, the Arabs were no match for their opponents. On the field of battle, though, the inspired Arabs rapidly conquered all of Mesopotamia, Syria, and Palestine. By 642, Egypt had been wrested from the Byzantine Empire, while the Persian armies had been crushed at the key battles of Qadisiya in 637, and Nehavend in 642. But even these enormous conquests, which were made under the leadership of Muhammad's close friends and immediate successors, Ali, Abu Bakr and 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, did not mark the end of the Arab advance. By 711, the Arab armies had swept completely across North Africa to the Atlantic Ocean There they turned north and, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, overwhelmed the Visigothic kingdom in Spain.

For a while, it must have seemed that the Moslems would overwhelm all of Christian Europe. However, in 732, at the famous Battle of Tours, a Moslem army, which had advanced into the center of France, was at last defeated by the Franks.

Nevertheless, in a scant century of fighting, these Bedouin tribesmen, inspired by the word of the Prophet, had carved out an empire stretching from the borders of India to the Atlantic Ocean-the largest empire that the world had yet seen. And everywhere that the armies conquered, large-scale conversion to the new faith eventually followed. Now, not all of these conquests proved permanent. The Persians, though they have remained faithful to the religion of the Prophet, have since regained their independence from the Arabs. And in Spain, more than seven centuries of warfare, finally resulted in the Christians reconquering the entire peninsula. However, Mesopotamia and Egypt, the two cradles of ancient civilization, have remained Moslem, as has the entire coast of North Africa. The new religion, of course, continued to spread, in the intervening centuries, far beyond the borders of the original Moslem conquests. Currently it has tens of millions of adherents in Africa and Central Asia and even more in Pakistan and northern India, and in Indonesia. In Indonesia, the new faith has been a unifying factor. In the Indian subcontinent, however, the conflict between Moslems and Hindus is still a major obstacle to unity.

How, then, is one to assess the overall impact of Muhammad on human history? Like all religions, Islam exerts an enormous influence upon the lives of its followers. It is for this reason that the founders of the world's great religions all figure prominently in this book. Since there are roughly twice as many Christians as Moslems (sekrg tak jauh sgt macam nih) in the world, it may initially seem strange that Muhammad has been ranked higher than Jesus.

There are two principal reasons for that decision. First, Muhammad played a far more important role in the development of Islam than Jesus did in the development of Christianity. Although Jesus was responsible for the main ethical and moral precepts of Christianity (insofar as these differed from Judaism), St. Paul was the main developer of Christian theology, its principal proselytizer, and the author of a large portion of the New Testament. Muhammad, however, was responsible for both the theology of Islam and its main ethical and moral principles. In addition, he played the key role in proselytizing the new faith, and in establishing the religious practices of Islam.

Moreover, he is the author (not author actually.. these are the words of God) of the Moslem holy scriptures, the Koran, a collection of certain of Muhammad's insights that he believed had been directly revealed to him by Allah. Most of these utterances were copied more or less faithfully during Muhammad's lifetime and were collected together in authoritative form not long after his death. The Koran therefore, closely represents Muhammad's ideas and teachings and to a considerable extent his exact words (God's words!). No such detailed compilation of the teachings of Christ has survived. Since the Koran is at least as important to Moslems as the Bible is to Christians, the influence of Muhammad through the medium of the Koran has been enormous. It is probable that the relative influence of Muhammad on Islam has been larger than the combined influence of Jesus Christ and St. Paul on Christianity.

On the purely religious level, then, it seems likely that Muhammad has been as influential in human history as Jesus. Furthermore, Muhammad (unlike Jesus) was a secular as well as a religious leader. In fact, as the driving force behind the Arab conquests, he may well rank as the most influential political leader of all time. Of many important historical events, one might say that they were inevitable and would have occurred even without the particular political leader who guided them. For example, the South American colonies would probably have won their independence from Spain even if Simon Bolivar had never lived. But this cannot be said of the Arab conquests. Nothing similar had occurred before Muhammad, and there is no reason to believe that the conquests would have been achieved without him. The only comparable conquests in human history are those of the Mongols in the thirteenth century, which were primarily due to the influence of Genghis Khan. These conquests, however, though more extensive than those of the Arabs, did not prove permanent, and today the only areas occupied by the Mongols are those that they held prior to the time of Genghis Khan. It is far different with the conquests of the Arabs. From Iraq to Morocco, there extends a whole chain of Moslem nations united not merely by their faith in Islam, but also by their Arabic language, history, and culture.

The centrality of the Koran in the Moslem religion and the fact that it is written in Arabic have probably prevented the Arab language from breaking up into mutually unintelligible dialects, which might otherwise have occurred in the intervening thirteen centuries. Differences and divisions between these Arab states exist, of course, and they are considerable, but the partial disunity should not blind us to the important elements of unity that have continued to exist. For instance, neither Iran nor Indonesia, both oil-producing states and both Islamic in religion joined in the oil embargo of the winter of 1973-74. It is no coincidence that all of the Arab states, and only the Arab states, participated in the embargo. We see, then, that the Arab conquests of the seventh century have continued to play an important role in human history, down to the present day. It is this unparalleled combination of secular and religious influence which I feel entitles Muhammad to be considered the most influential single figure in human history.

Celebrating Non-Muslim Festivals
Monday, April 17, 2006
As'kum/hello to all,

Celebrating Non-Muslim Festivals

These days, we can see many muslims follow other beliefs or celebrate other religions such as Christianity, Hinduism, without knowing that it poses a great danger to the aqidah (belief) of the Muslim. As reported in an authentic hadeeth, "Whoever imitates a people is one of them". In fact, Muslims try to follow the non-Muslims(particularly the Western) in everything, major or minor, in the aspect of development, progress and civilization globalization and other dazzling but deceitful slogans.

Rulings on Celebrating and Imitating Non-Muslims' Festivals

These rulings or statements are issued by "The Standing Committee on Academic Research and Issuing Fatawa".

1. There are many evidences in the Qur'an and Sunnah which make it clear that it is forbidden to imitate non-Muslims with regard to things that are exclusively theirs. This includes imitating them in their festivals and everything that they venerate, and celebrating them.

One of the texts which specifically forbid imitating them in their festivals is the verse (interpretation of the meaning): " ...and those who do not bear witness to al-zoor (falsehood)… " (Holy Qur'an, 25:72).

A group of the Salaf (Predecessors) including Ibn Sireen, Mujahid and al-Rabi'i ibn Anas interpreted the word al-zoor (falsehood) as referring to the festivals of the disbelievers. 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do not enter upon the polytheists in their churches on the day of their festival, for the wrath (of Allah) descends upon them." He also said: "Avoid the enemies of Allah during their festival."

2. It is also forbidden to join in the festivals of the disbelievers for many other reasons, including the following:

- Imitating them in some of their festivals implies that one condones and approves of their false beliefs.

- Imitating them and behaving like them with regard to external matters leads one to imitating them and behaving like them with regard to internal matters such as their corrupt beliefs, and being slowly and subtly won over to their way of thinking.

One of the greatest evils that results from this is that imitating the disbelievers with regard to external appearances generates feelings of love and friendship towards them, which contradicts faith, as Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): "O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Awliya'a (friends, protectors, helpers); they are but Awliya'a of each other. And if any amongst you takes them (as Awliya'a), then surely, he is one of them. Verily, Allah guides not those people who are the wrong-doers." (Holy Qur'an, 5:51)

Based on the above, it is not permissible for a man who believes in Allah as his Lord, Islam as his religion, and Muhammad (PBUH) as his Prophet and Messenger, to celebrate any festival that has no basis in the religion of Islam. This includes the New Year and millennium. Neither is he permitted to attend such festivals or take part in them, or to help others do so in any way whatsoever, because this is a sin and is transgressing the limits set by Allah. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): " ....do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment." (Holy Qur'an, 5:2.)

A Fact Sheet on Easter

What is Easter?
Easter is considered by many Christian churches the most important and one of the oldest holidays of the Church year after the weekly Sabbath which is held on Sundays. It is a time for redemption or deliverance from sin.

Why is Easter celebrated?
It is celebrated to commemorate the Christian belief in the death by crucifixion of Prophet Jesus and his resurrection three days later.

When is Easter celebrated?
The date for Easter can fall between March 25 and April 25. There are two main churches who celebrate Easter: the Eastern Orthodox and the Western churches. Generally, the Western Church comprises the Protestants, Catholics, and Anglicans. The Eastern Church, on the other hand, is made up of: the Orthodox churches, the Oriental churches, and the Eastern-rite churches affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.

The Eastern Orthodox church may celebrate Easter at the same time as the Western church, or one, four or five weeks later due to a slightly different method of calculation.

Some customs and practices surrounding Easter

1. Fasting before Easter
Prior to the celebration of Easter, Christians may fast for the 40-day period called Lent. Lent is a time to prepare for Easter by making penitence. There are differences amongst Christians pertaining to this fasting and when it begins.

In Western churches, Lent begins on a day called Ash Wednesday. This is six-and-a-half weeks before Easter. Christians fast except on Sundays. While initially there were strict laws about fasting, the Roman Catholics later made these unnecessary during World War Two. Today, only Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are kept as days of fasting during Lent. However, there is still emphasis on penitence during this period.

In Eastern churches, on the other hand, Lent starts on the Monday of the seventh week before Easter and ends of the Friday nine days before the holiday. In Eastern churches, even today, those who are fasting cannot consume wine, oil and dairy products. Fasting also takes place on Sunday, unlike in the Western church. However the fasting on the weekends is more relaxed.

2. Easter eggs
In some churches, eggs are forbidden to be eaten during the fasting of Lent. During Easter, a time of joy and celebration, not only are they eaten, but they are colored and decorated. Eggs are symbolic of new life and resurrection, which are the themes of Easter.

Cultures where Christianity is practiced use eggs in different ways during Easter celebrations. For instance, in Greece eggs painted crimson red are exchanged with the belief that this practice honors the blood of Jesus. In Germany eggs are hollowed out, dyed and hung from shrubs and trees during Easter Week. Armenians decorate hollow eggs with pictures of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and other religious designs.

The Easter eggs also play a role in games. In North America, this can be seen on Easter morning with children going on Easter egg hunts in parks or backyards. They are looking for the eggs the "Easter Bunny" has hidden while they were asleep. Sometimes prizes of candy are awaiting the child finding the most eggs.

3. The Easter rabbit
In ancient Egypt, the hare was a symbol of fertility. While in Europe, the symbol of the hare has been adopted in relation to the celebration of Easter, it is different in North America. Here, we find the Easter rabbit, which is also a symbol of fertility. It is believed it the Easter Rabbit lays the eggs, for which reason they are hidden in a nest or in the garden.

My opinion: I would say that we, Muslims, cannot celebrate Easter due to the statements above. The act of giving people the 'eggs' for presents or eating them on the day of the celebration is a way of saying that we approve their belief. Having said that, I would like to let you know that I'm no ulama' to give fatwa, but this is just my humble opinon. Open for discussion.

Berdoa Agar Mati Segera

Wallahu'alam bissowab

Abu Musa Al-Muari : Assalaamu'alaikum;

Wallahu a'lam bissowaab

Abu Musa Al-Muari : Assalaamu'alaikum;

Semoga Allah membaiki ehwal kita semua.

Wallahu a'lam bissowaab

Feel free to give your opinion.. Salam.. May God bless us!

Craigmillar Castle (20 minutes by bus from edinburgh city)

On the 1st and 2nd April 2006, all the castles in Scotland went FREE for everyone. Therefore, I didn't miss the opportunity to visit several castles nearby Edinburgh. I've posted pictures of me in Edinburgh castle last week, and below are the photos of a smaller castle which is also located nearby the place I'm staying now. The entrance fee is £4.50 (I think) compared to £10.00+ for edinburgh castle. So, my advice is, if you want to visit Scotland and also short of money, come here when the castles are FREE. For your info, they will be free twice a year(somewhere in April and November). The dates vary so if I happen to know when they will be free again, I will inform you guys. Till then, enjoy the pics!

The Million Dollar Homepage
Tuesday, April 11, 2006
Assalamu'alaikum/hello to all,

The Million Dollar Homepage

Have you ever dreamt you were rich? To be honest, sometimes I think about it. Although deep inside my heart I know that it is close to impossible, I still dream about it. Sigh~~ Is it a bad thing?

Recently, I stumbled upon a website which is creatively built by a student from England. Later I found out that he has generated a gross income of $1,037,100 USD just from building this site. Huh? Would you believe that? How is it possible eh?

His name is Alex Tew, age 21. Initially, he had this idea of creating a site consists of a 1000 x 1000 pixel grid (one million pixels), and sells a pixel at US $1 per pixel. Basically, it is for business companies who want to advertise their products in his page. So the money that is raised from here will be used to fund his university education. He didn't even think that he could sell all the pixels but then he just went ahead with the idea.

And to my surprise, all the pixel grid are already SOLD OUT! Amazing! He is now a millionaire! Go here to have a look at his site: http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/

Back to the topic that I have raised before. Is it a bad thing to have a daydream of being a millionaire? Well, in my opinion, I would say yes! (Everyone can say their words here as I never said that I am totally right.) The desire to need and want more is definitely a disease! We should be thankful to God for what we are now. Do not be too materialistic as this will just make us away from God. We will love the world soo much until we forget about the Hereafter.

Thus, I urge everyone to remember death and the Hereafter! Reflect on the state of the grave after our death, which can be either a parcel of Paradise or a pit of Hell! Please reflect on this consistently so that you won't love the world TOO much and hence the desire for wealth, fame, prestige and all the things that the world has to offer.

Everyone in the world will someday die and stand before their Maker which is the ultimate destiny of all human beings! Remember this.. remember... and always remember....

May ALLAH bless us all.

On a side note, my GUBU friend, yasmin, is going to Cairo tomorrow for 9 days. So, I would like to wish you a safe journey and don't forget to always remember ALLAH when you are having so much fun!

The only pic of yasmin that I have. (sorry guys, she has already been taken, not me though.. sigh~~)

Salam,

Lion roars Allah

The lion makes short ablution and says the name of Allah! Thousand visitors of a zoo in city Baku became witnesses of this miracle. The inspector of the zoo said, that the Lion was brought from Iran in 1999.

I am not really sure how true this video is, but after all, we still can get benefit from it, don't we?

If you have slow internet connection, press play and then pause for a few minutes before playing the video.

Pemurnian Sejarah Islam (Siri 1)

SEPINTAS LALU TENTANG IBNU ISHAQ : PEROSAK SEJARAH AWAL ISLAM

Namanya Muhamad bin Ishaq .

"Aku bersaksi bahawa Muhammad bin Ishaq adalah pendusta besar " - Yahya bin Said al-Qatthan

Wallahua'lam

I am not really sure about this. So, please discuss it here. I also want to post someone's comment on this issue:

Assalamualaikum wrt,

Wassalam.

Anger

Poem verses 130-37

As for the swelling ocean of all these diseases, I mean anger; if you come to its shore, you'll see great astonishments.

Its waves and everything else about it are overflowing. So say of it what you will without constraint.

It has two treatments: one of them removes it altogether without trace. The other suppresses it should it manifest itself.

To be adorned with the ornament of its cure, remember the extensive praise lavished upon forbearance and humility

in Sacred Law, as well as in the poetry and prose of the wise. Indeed, remember that all of the prophets have been depicted as having both qualities.

Repel [anger] by perceiving at its onset that there is no one doing anything in reality except the Almighty;

also by performing ablution with cold water, keeping silent, lying down (if one is sitting)

and sitting (if one is standing). It will pass by doing these things, and also by seeking refuge in God as was mentioned in the tradition.
